Material Lat. faba (fal. haba) `Bohne' (dazu die PN Fabius, Fabidius usw. und die Insel Fabāria), russ. usw. bobъ, apr. babo ds. Wohl redupliziertes Lallwort und als `aufgeblasene Schote, Schwellung' mit gr. φακός m. `Linse': alb. bathë f. `Saubohne' (*bhak̂ā) verwandt. Auch aisl. baun, ags. bēan, ahd. bōna `Bohne' (Baunonia friesische Insel bei Plinius) sind wohl durch Dissimil. von *baþnā zu *ƀaunā entstanden.
